Stop Trying to Change Your Thoughts
One of the biggest ideas in personal development is that your thoughts create your reality.
I believe that's true.
I just don't believe it's the whole truth.
Because if changing your thoughts were enough, wouldn't most of us be healed by now?
We've repeated the affirmations.
Read the books.
Listened to the podcasts.
Tried to think more positively.
Yet one difficult conversation...
One rejection...
One unexpected disappointment...
And suddenly the old thoughts return.
Maybe the problem isn't that you're thinking the wrong thoughts.
Maybe you're trying to change them too soon.
Thoughts Are Messengers, Not Masters
I don't think our thoughts are where transformation begins.
I think they're where transformation announces itself.
Every thought is reporting something.
A belief.
A memory.
A meaning you've been carrying, often without realizing it.
When a thought says, I'm not enough, I no longer rush to replace it.
I'm much more interested in asking:
What belief is this thought protecting?
That question has changed the way I relate to myself.
Because thoughts don't grow out of nowhere.
They grow from roots we rarely see.
The Meaning Beneath the Story
I've always loved learning.
Psychology.
Neuroscience.
Spiritual traditions.
For years I thought my drive to collect certifications came from curiosity.
And part of it did.
But recently I uncovered something deeper.
A friend gently pointed out that perhaps I wasn't only trying to learn.
Perhaps I was trying to become legitimate.
The moment she said it, everything clicked.
The certifications were never the issue.
They were simply expressing a belief I hadn't fully seen.
That's what meaning does.
An experience happens once.
The meaning we assign to it can quietly organize our lives for decades.
Awareness Changes the Conversation
One of the greatest gifts of awareness is that it creates space.
Not to judge ourselves.
To understand ourselves.
Instead of asking,
"How do I stop thinking this?"
I've started asking,
"What is this thought trying to show me?"
Can you feel the difference?
One question creates resistance.
The other creates curiosity.
And curiosity has a remarkable way of uncovering what force never can.
Coherence Feels Like Coming Home
I don't think healing is about winning a battle against your mind.
I think it's about bringing the different parts of yourself back into a relationship.
Your thoughts.
Your beliefs.
Your emotions.
Your body.
Your nervous system.
When they're all pulling in different directions, life feels exhausting.
When they begin moving together, something shifts.
You stop performing.
You start expressing.
You stop proving.
You start serving.
You stop surviving.
You start living.
That's coherence.
And I don't know if I've found a better word for it than home.
A Different Question
So the next time an old thought appears, resist the urge to argue with it.
Instead, become curious.
Not because the thought is true.
Because it's pointing toward something.
A belief.
A story.
A meaning that may finally be ready to be seen.
Maybe you've never been failing to think positively.
Maybe you've simply been painting brown leaves green.
The roots have been waiting patiently all along.
You are the Witness.
You shape your field.
And your field shapes your life.
